Common Reasons to Visit an Emergency Room
Hospitals are one of the most important places on earth. It’s mainly because that’s where people get cured of certain illnesses they can’t get treated at home. The hospital is a place where you can go to when you feel sick, even when it’s not serious. That’s also where you get check-ups every so often. But the most popular place in the hospital is the ER or emergency room.
People specifically go to ER for multiple reasons, and some may not even be an emergency. The reasons could range from skin rashes to dangerous accidents causing them to immediately go here. Below are the top 10 reasons for ER visits by people of all ages. For many people, some of these reasons can be outrageous but we have our own reasons for going anyway.
- Stomach pain, cramps, and spasms. All of us, at one time or another, has had stomach illnesses. Some people experiences worse feelings than we do, which is probably why they go to the ER. Of course, stomach pain could pose a more dangerous threat than simple food poisoning, which is why this is perfectly understandable.
- Chest pain and related symptoms (not referable to body system). The second reason people go here is because of chest pains of different body parts. Chest pain can sometimes mean a heart attack, so people rush to the ER whenever they feel this symptom.
- Fever. Going to the ER on the first day of your fever is very unnecessary. People can fevers all the time, and it could be from too much stress or the bad weather. The time fever can be dangerous is if it’s already the third day without your temperature returning to normal or if you have a very high fever.
- Cough. Cough can be caused by multiple reasons, but usually, it’s pretty harmless in a way that it doesn’t kill. Although you should have this checked, going to the ER is unnecessary. Make an appointment with your physician. The exception is if the cough is combined with other symptoms like blood in the cough.
- Headache, pain in head. Because headaches can sometimes hurt us so bad, people rush to the ER to get it treated. But if this isn’t a recurrent symptom, then it’s probably just a simple headache. Besides, doctors can’t really treat it quickly. If headache is the only symptom you have, doctors will have to take some tests to determine your illness.
- Shortness of breath. Shortness of breath could be caused by a number of reasons, including panic attacks. If you suddenly have a feeling of dread followed by shortness of breath, this isn’t deadly. Some people just have this disorder which can’t be thoroughly cured by medicine. Panic attack is a psychological disorder.
- Back symptoms. Probably the people who usually have this are the old people. In that case, then maybe it isn’t an emergency. This is just a result of old age. But even if this isn’t a reason to go to an ER for, a trip to the doctor is necessary.
- Vomiting. Vomiting is a bit more dangerous. Unless of course, if it’s caused by overeating or too much alcohol. If that’s the reason you went to the ER, that’s pretty selfish of you. There are people who need attention and you’re there because you ate or drank too much. But vomiting can also be caused by food poisoning, which you need to go to the ER for.
- Sore throats. The throat is not something we’re very familiar with. So having a terrible feeling in the throat could be reason for being panicked and going to the ER.
- Accident, not otherwise specified. Accidents are inevitable, especially when it’s not your fault it happened. Also, many accidents are life-threatening like car crash and falling down a tree. Because of this, people who came to the ER because of accidents are usually prioritized since it could be a life-and-death situation.
The emergency room is for everyone. A U.S. law says that nobody can turn away a person in the ER, even if they can’t pay the hospital fees. Because of this, people generally go here to get treated. However, the sad part is that even people with minor and common health issues prefer ER over standard care by their primary physician.
